Call out for Oratory or Speaking Skills Resources

trosanelli Published in Help by Tim Rosanelli | Comment (0)

Hi everyone,

This post is a quick call out for information. Over the last few months, I was inspired by many awesome public speakers from elections, and others like Joel Osteen, Anthony Robbins, and Dave Ramsey.

I want to get some speech coaching and looking for resources.

What methods do you use to improve your public speaking skills? Do you know of any free internet resource? What public speaking techniques do you practice?

If you have anything, please add it to this post's comments.

Every Little Stich Helps

jgould Published in Untagged  by Jason Gould | Comment (0)

I love this picture of a knitted cap next to the weapons rack in our dojo. It was taken by my student, Linda, and it I captures, without using words or rhetoric, the power that the martial arts have to change the world. We use the bo, jo, sai, tonfa, kama, nunchaku, knife, techu, kai-bo, naginata, and other weapons at our dojo.

Now, please add knitting needles to the list.

My student Carolyn's community service project has really been taking off. She was featured in a local newspaper article just this past week. Ahh, the student becomes the teacher... how refreshing.

This month's Ode magazine features an article titled, "Every Little Stich Helps." I've ordered a copy of "Knitting for Good" to add to the dojo library. I'll place it right next to the books on weapons training.

Perfect Free Interval Timer for Your Tabata Workout

trosanelli Published in Untagged  by Tim Rosanelli | Comment (0)

One of our students, Gwen Fisher, sent me a link to a free Interval timer application that downloads to your PC.

Download the program here

http://www.mediafire.com/?9dndmxmtm1w

It is setup for Tabata Intervals but can easily be changed by going to the Timer menu and Set Timer. It starts with a "Let's get ready to rumble" then a bell rings to start and five bell chimes to stop. At the end, it makes a funny puke noise.

Have fun and train hard!

Old Fashion Kettle Corn

trosanelli Published in Nutrition by Tim Rosanelli | Comment (0)

I remember as a kid going to the Mercer Museum Folk Fest with my parents who were voluntaries for the Lion’s Club. At the folk fest, they had someone making kettle corn with a big cauldron. After the popcorn was done, they dump the cauldron of kettle corn into a canvas where they scoop it into popcorn containers. I love the salty sweetness of the kettle corn.

Well, I found a great do-at-home recipe.

Ingredients
1/4 cup Popcorn
1/4 cup Oil (vegetable or olive)
2 tablespoons Sugar
Salt

In a sauce pan big enough to hold all of the popped popcorn ~1 to 2 quarts, add popcorn and oil. Heat popcorn on high until first kernel pops. Remove from heat and add sugar. While shaking the sauce pan, continue to heat until the popcorn stops popping. Dump finished popcorn into bowl. Add salt to taste and serve.

A day on the Beach,

masterbostock Published in Untagged  by Jack Bostock | Comment (1)

This past saturday Nov 15  we held our outdoor Black belt challenge, I ve implemented  the Ultimate Black belt test concept of daily testing for all my Black belts , My schools are located in beautiful sunny Florida, So of course our out door challenge took place on one of our white sandy beaches, I had 68 Black belts test on saturday,Doing all their requierments, forms, self defense, combos, push ups, sit ups, board breaking, cement breaking, But this year we added a guest speaker a marine  biologist who spoke to us about all the things we could do to help  keep our oceans beautiful,"enviromental self defense" After words we all spent some time doing a beach clean up,when we were done we all sat on the beach and meditated  just listening to the sound of the waves.

Love and Peace

Electric Car

pasquinilli Published in Untagged  by Matt Pasquinilli | Comment (0)

Earlier this year I bought a GEM Electric Car made by Chrysler. I put some soft doors on it and bigger tires and rims. On a full charge I can drive for around 35 miles at a top speed of 32 miles per hour. This is perfect for me to drive to work and home every day (on the days I don't ride my bike. We also use the car at special events we sponsor like 5 and 10 k runs. It has our martial arts school logo all over it, along with the logo of several businesses that sponsor it too. The car was very inexpensive and while gas was over $4 per gallon, it felt great knowing that a daily charge would cost less than the what it takes to run my refrigerator. The students love it and we talk about it as a symbol of environmental self-defense.

Simplicity

srkungfu Published in Untagged  by Jeff Brinker | Comment (0)
This week marked the end of an era for me. I found a good home for my 1974 orange Volvo. This car was my most prized possession but I could no longer bear to watch it slowly disintegrate while sitting unused. My sister has always had a passion for that car too so I am hoping she will take care of it and get another ten years out of it.

For me this situation offered an important reinforcement that things are just things. My possessions do not define me, and while they may offer me some comforts, they ultimately do not bring me happiness.

My acceptance of this fact has also allowed me to continue to simplify my life by letting go of other possessions. I sent the first two Apple computers I have ever owned, including my beloved lime flavoured iMac, to the HERO Housing Resource Centre in Alabama. It feels good knowing that there is a use and a need for them and it definitely alleviates a guilt that I never even knew I was feeling over how they were underutilized by me.

While the spiritual side of my development has grown this week through simplifying my life, my physical growth has been struggling as of late. While taking it easy over the past two months in an attempt to eliminate the persistent swelling I still have in my knee from this Spring's latest surgery, I developed a pain in both of my upper calves. It feels like I have been working them and have the muscle ache that comes with a job well done. However I have not been working out with my legs at all and yet this ache has only worsened over the past eight weeks. The common consensus is that I am suffering from planters fasciitis and my tendons are inflamed all the way up the backs of my legs. Since I have been relatively inactive before and during this development I was at a loss to explain why this would manifest at this point in my training. I was leaning toward my motorcycle riding as the only possible cause when I started to suffer from back spasms and paid a visit to my chiropractor. He took one look at the pronation of my ankles and declared this as an explanation for my inflamed tendons, my past five knee surgeries, and my current back spasms.

So while I have been living the good life where socks and shoes are a rarity, my arches have been slowly collapsing resulting in me developing pronated ankles. This pronation has put constant strain on my knees and lower legs for many years and now I am at the point where a change in lifestyle is in order. From now on shoes should be worn at all times and definitely for all work outs.

Since planters fasciitis has an average recovery time of fifty weeks, it's a good thing I haven't done something crazy like enrolling in the UBBT for the next fifty or so weeks. Actually I only see positives coming out of this. I have found the perfect time to complete some of my empathy training and spend a day in a wheel chair. I can also focus on some of the more cerebral parts of my requirements guilt free too. At the end of the fifty weeks I should just about be at my peak for my final performance. Everything is going according to plan, excellent.
